Transcontinental Railroad: This railroad impacted America greatly 1.) a route is now available to get from East to West, aiding transportation and 2.) it was a big step in industry/science and technology during that time period. It created a trade route, faster transportation, and jobs (while it was being built.) It helped aid Western expansion, as well. Corruption in the railroad industry STOCK WATERING: price manipulation; selling more stock than the owner actually has in order to lower the price before buying it back POOLS: agreement between railroads to divide competition REBATES: practice in which railroads would give money back to its more favored customers, rather than charging them lower prices so it would appear as if the railroad company charged a flat rate for all consumers LONG HAUL/SHORT HAUL: different railroad companies charged separate rates depending on how long the travel would be. (Interstate Commerce Act counteracted this, making it illegal to charge more per mile for a short haul than a long one) IMPORTANCE: The corruption in the railroad industry led to the creation of many progressive ideals. Horizontal vs. Vertical Integration Horizontal Integration: buying out all other competition in the same phase. EXAMPLE: J.D. Rockefeller and Standard Oil Vertical Integration: buying all the steps needed for production EXAMPLE: Andrew Carnegie and Carnegie Steel Bessemer Process The Bessemer process transformed the steel making industry. Henry Bessemer created a quicker, cheaper and more reliable way to make steel, which aided in the construction of skyscrapers. Skyscrapers aided in the influx of available housing for immigrants.
